Architecture
Group Leader: Luke Pickering
Objectives of the Group
We are a large and friendly Group, who are interested in the buildings and settlements of the local area. We arrange talks in the winter months and trips to towns, villages and individual buildings once the weather gets warmer. We have a varied programme which includes the ancient and modern, usually with knowledgeable local guides. Our tours often finish in the local pub or teashop!
We meet on the third Thursday of the month, generally at 10.30am. Some of our visits do have limited numbers and we have Booking Forms at the General Meetings where you can put your name down. If you have any questions, please phone Luke on 07774 251197.
See below for photos taken at some of our events, and reports are accessible.

THE SACRED AND THE STRANGE – SYMBOLISM OF LINCOLN CATHEDRAL
THURSDAY 19 FEBRUARY 2026 – 10.15AM FOR 10.30AM
Our excellent regular Cathedral Guide, Simon Judge, will take us on a new tour where we will have the opportunity to discover the secret language of every element of this magnificent edifice. We are to learn the hidden meanings of the stone carvings, the significance of the towers and encode the symbolism of animals, birds, fish and much, much more!
We will meet just inside the Cathedral main entrance, ready for a 10.30am start. There is a £7.50 charge for the tour. Members also require an Annual Pass to enter the Cathedral. This should be bought prior to the visit, unless already held. (It is understood that the £7.50 charge does not apply to Cathedral Volunteers).
Please add your name to the Booking Form, which will be on the Architecture Group’s table in the Welton Room at the 8 January and 5 February 2026 General Meetings. The tour is restricted to 20 members and payment of £7.50 is requested from each member by 5 February 2026, to secure your place.
The tour lasts around an hour. Members may wish to extend their outing by treating themselves to a drink, or perhaps lunch, in one of the various cafes around the Cathedral area. If lunch at the Cathedral Café might be your choice, please let me know and I will see if some tables can be reserved.

ARCHITECTURE GROUP
VISIT TO SOUTHSIDE/ST KATHERINE’S, COLEGRAVE STREET, LINCOLN. LN5 8DW
THURSDAY 19 MARCH 2026 – 10.15AM FOR 10.30AM
This Grade II listed former Methodist Church of St Katherine’s dates back to 1887 and is now in use
as the community venue and commercial centre known as Southside.
The Architecture Group is fortunate in being able to hire this impressive building for the morning.
We expect it to be a very special meeting as, in view of its size, there will not be the normal
restriction on numbers.
We are to be welcomed by our guide and host, Colin Webb. He will begin with a presentation of the
work and uses of the site, followed by a brief history and with time for a look around this interesting
building, with its unusual features. There will be a break for refreshments at the halfway point.
The visit will last approximately two hours. There are accessible toilets. The cost, which includes
refreshments, is £7 per member. Payments will be collected in advance, by 5 March 2026.
Car parking details will follow. Car-sharing is recommended.
To join us on what promises to be an enjoyable experience, please add your name to the Booking
Form which will be on the Architecture Group’s table in the Welton Room, at the February and
March General Meetings.
